Shelton Alford is an artist currently serving a life sentence and is in his 38th year of incarceration. Raised in the East Falls section of Philadelphia, Alford came to painting during a deeply difficult period in his life following the sudden loss of his mother-in-law to cancer. At the same time, the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic intensified the emotional weight he was carrying. Seeking an outlet, he turned to art after an older mentor he frequently spoke with introduced him to painting by giving him a brush and canvas. From that moment forward, Alford dedicated himself fully to the craft and has not put the brush down since.

Committed to growth as an artist, he studies art books and magazines to expand his knowledge and refine his technique. His work is rooted in storytelling, often reflecting meaningful moments from his life, particularly the joy and memories of his childhood. While his circumstances are a significant part of his reality, Alford chooses not to center his art on incarceration. Instead, he focuses on themes of hope, happiness, and personal reflection. Looking ahead, he envisions creating a painting that symbolizes freedom—himself walking away from prison, guided by faith and prayer. Alford’s greatest supporter is his daughter, who attends every exhibition featuring his work, offering unwavering encouragement and pride.
